EDUCATIONAL RESOURCE
for
AAU POWERLIFTING SUBSTANCE ABUSE PROGRAM

Drug Policy | Consent Waivers

The purpose of the AAU Powerlifting Substance Abuse Program is to affirm Powerlifting’s commitment/position that our Sport will conduct fair and equitable competition at all sanctioned AAU Powerlifting events. This commitment/position will assist an athlete by providing an incentive to not be pressured to use chemical substances in order to compete in AAU Powerlifting and to help safeguard the health of the AAU Powerlifting Athlete. In addition, the Program provides education for young people, adolescents and adults.

Athletes put their health (and in some cases their athletic eligibility) at risk by consuming dietary supplements without supervision from a physician. Dietary/nutritional supplements have potential to be dangerous, may contain substances banned by AAU Powerlifting and under regulated both national and internationally.

The AAU Sport of Powerlifting utilizes The National Center for Drug Free Sport Inc. (Drug Free Sport) to administer its drug testing program. Drug Free Sport is also responsible for administering drug testing programs for many high profile clients, including the NCAA, NFL, MLB and others.

AAU Powerlifting has subscribed to the Resource Exchange Center (REC); the REC is an educational resource provided by Drug Free Sport to help AAU Powerlifting’s athletes and coaches get up-to-date, accurate and confidential information about dietary supplements and dangerous or banned substances. Athletes and coaches can research products through the REC website and also can submit questions about dietary supplements and banned substances using forms available on the site.

*Access to the REC is available 24 hours a day, seven (7) days a week, online at:
www.drugfreesport.com .
*Emails sent to REC staff are answered within 24 hours of receipt.
* All inquiries may be made anonymously.
*The AAU password is: RECAAU

If you are a member of the AAU, please utilize this resource so that our commitment/purpose to drug-free competition is upheld.

Waiver and Consent Forms

All adult athletes must sign “Waiver and Consent” forms in order to compete. When you sign in at an AAU Powerlifting sanctioned meet you will be asked to read, understand and sign the “Waiver and Consent” forms to demonstrate your understanding of the program and willingness to participate in it. By signing these forms, you release, discharge and covenant not to sue the AAUPC and the AAU and other related parties

Process

Once The Center has chosen an athlete for drug testing they will be given notice of the selection , given instructions to what to do and what to bring with you (read the instructions carefully) and where to provide a collected sample of urine.
Process continued

If an athlete does not understand something, they can ask questions with the collectors or the AAUPC.The National Center for Drug Free Sport and the laboratory are completely independent of the AAUPC and the AAU. You must comply with their instructions during the testing process.

Please be sure to bring any prescriptions you may be taking with you so that they may be properly noted.

An athlete may bring a witness. Please note that the witness may be asked to sign and understand any documents involved in the testing and to confirm in writing the have done so.

During the testing, only the athlete, the witness and The National Center for Drug Free Sports representative/collector may be present when samples are taken.

When the results are available they will be given first to the AAUPC Substance Abuse Committee Chair.

Appeals

If an athlete is notified of a positive test for a banned substance, they may either; a) accept the findings and the resulting penalties or, b) request that the B specimen be tested (at athlete’s expense). If you have the B specimen tested and if it yields a positive result for a banned substance and you wish to contest the matter, you must follow the hearings and appeals process in the AAU Code Book.

A copy of this program and list of banned substances, the list is the same list as the USOC and the IOC, and these lists are available through their web sites. If an athlete has any questions regarding the program you may call Harry Halverstadt at 916-735-7932 or via e-mail at: hcwzkds@gmail.com. Once again, if you have questions regarding the inclusion of a substance in the program you may call the Resource Exchange Center, tool free at 877-202-0769 or 877-474-7312.
